New traffic accident data confirms that buses are the safest mode
Recent data from traffic accident victim care in João Pessoa highlights buses as the safest mode of transport in the city's transportation system.
A recent study from the Hospital Estadual de Emergência e Trauma Senador Humberto Lucena in João Pessoa has revealed that buses are the safest mode of transport in the city's traffic system. According to data released by the Sindicato das Empresas de Transporte Coletivo Urbano de Passageiros de João Pessoa (Sintur-JP), in 2025 the hospital recorded a total of 12,214 traffic accident victim care cases, with only 41 of these cases involving buses. This constitutes a mere 0.3% of all incidents, confirming buses as the safest option compared to other transport modalities.
The data also sheds light on the dangers associated with motorcycles, which were responsible for the highest number of traffic-related incidents. Out of the total cases recorded, motorcyclists accounted for a staggering 9,747 incidents, representing approximately 79.8% of the total. This stark contrast emphasizes the vulnerabilities faced by motorcyclists in contrast to users of public buses, reinforcing the need for awareness and enhanced safety measures for two-wheeled vehicles.
These findings are significant as they challenge common perceptions regarding transportation safety and underscore the need for continued investment in public transport systems. They may inform policy decisions around urban transport and safety initiatives, as cities seek to make travel safer for all citizens. The promotion of bus use over motorcycles could also be a vital strategy for reducing traffic injuries and fatalities in urban areas like João Pessoa, where road safety remains a pressing concern.
