Minister promises to amend existing education standards and create new ones after State Audit Office review
Latvian Minister of Education has committed to reforming education standards following concerns raised by the State Audit Office about the quality oversight in schools.
In response to a review by the State Audit Office, the Latvian Minister of Education has pledged to enhance current education standards and establish new frameworks to monitor quality across schools. The review highlighted significant deficiencies in the existing oversight mechanisms, indicating that educational quality is not being adequately measured or evaluated, which has raised concerns about the efficiency of previous financial investments in monitoring systems. Following this, the Minister announced the resumption of monitoring evaluations that had been previously cancelled, emphasizing their importance for assessing the foundational skills of students in grades three, six, and eight.
The Minister has outlined the plans for the upcoming spring monitoring, which will specifically focus on essential skills for these grade levels, as well as the implementation outcomes of a unified schooling approach. The data collected from these assessments will be available in the summer and will provide comprehensive insights for municipalities and educational institutions, aiding in the analysis necessary for supporting teachers, school management, and educational teams in their development efforts. This renewed focus on evaluation aims not only to improve educational outcomes but also to guide future resources and support necessary for positive change.
Additionally, the Minister acknowledged the concerns articulated by the State Audit Office regarding the shortage of support personnel in schools, affirming the need for increased staffing resources to enhance the quality of education. The government's commitment to reforming education practices reflects a responsive approach to rectifying issues identified in the auditing process and ensuring the educational system can better meet the needs of students and educators alike.
