State Audit: In Latvia, Equal Quality of Primary Education is Not Ensured

The Latvian State Audit Office has highlighted significant disparities in the quality of primary education across schools, despite a unified educational standard.

The Latvian State Audit Office has issued a report indicating that, while there is a standard for primary education applicable to all schools, disparities in the implementation of this standard can lead to significant differences in educational quality. Key areas of concern include variations in the number of teaching hours, assessment of students' performance, and the provision of support to students. These inconsistencies suggest that an accredited school does not necessarily guarantee a high-quality educational experience for its students.

Moreover, the report criticized the current education planning processes, highlighting that the accreditation process and quality monitoring tools are inadequate for ensuring quality primary education. The evaluation of students' performance is not being utilized timely to identify children's individual needs and provide targeted support, which could aid in their educational growth. The report also implies that the existing framework is costly and fragmented, failing to comprehensively address the challenges facing the education sector in Latvia.

The State Audit Office has put forth ten recommendations aimed at improving the education system, emphasizing the need for a more robust and effective approach to educational planning and monitoring. These suggestions are expected to facilitate better outcomes for students, helping to bridge the existing gaps in educational quality across Latvian schools.
