The State Department for Environment and Climate Change in Kenya is currently facing a significant funding gap of Sh3.397 billion for the 2026/27 financial year. This funding shortfall raises serious concerns regarding the implementation of crucial sustainability and climate resilience programs that are essential for the country’s environmental management and adaptation strategies. The total funding required by the ministry is Sh10.105 billion, while the proposed allocation stands at only Sh6.708 billion, highlighting the extent of the financial challenge.

Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Festus Ng'eno, addressed Members of Parliament, pointing out that this financial deficit is already affecting service delivery within the sector. Ng'eno emphasized that inadequate funding from the exchequer and other sources has severely hampered the ministry's ability to carry out planned programs and activities, which are vital for promoting environmental sustainability and tackling climate change issues. The staggered and insufficient release of funds from the exchequer has further complicated the operational challenges faced by the ministry.
