Kenya: Cabinet Approves Sh4.1bn for Drought Relief Across Affected Regions

The Kenyan Cabinet has approved Sh4.1 billion to address worsening drought conditions affecting millions across the country.

The Kenyan Cabinet has made a critical decision to allocate Sh4.1 billion for drought relief efforts as the country grapples with rapidly deteriorating food security affecting millions of citizens. Currently, an estimated 3.3 million people are facing acute food shortages, a number expected to rise to 3.6 million by June 2026 if necessary measures are not implemented soon. The drought's severity has prompted the government to categorize certain counties like Mandera, Wajir, Kwale, and Kilifi into an Alarm phase, while a further 12 counties are on Alert status due to worsening conditions.

The irrigation and resources available have come under significant strain due to the ongoing drought, leading to rising rates of malnutrition among vulnerable populations. Data reports indicate that over 810,000 children and more than 104,000 pregnant and lactating women are severely affected, pointing toward a looming crisis that could have long-term health implications if immediate interventions are not carried out. The new funding approved by the Cabinet will facilitate not only food relief but also logistics and essential non-food items, which are critical for sustaining those impacted by the drought.

Authorities emphasized that the allocation builds on prior funding decisions made in December 2025 and January 2026, signaling an urgent response strategy to avert the potential for a humanitarian disaster. Despite these initiatives, the concerns surrounding deteriorating livestock conditions and the ongoing increase in malnutrition underline the necessity for continued and enhanced support from both local and international stakeholders to effectively address this ongoing crisis and safeguard the lives of those most at risk due to food insecurity.
