Johanna Talihärm elected to the IOC Athletes' Commission
Estonian biathlete Johanna Talihärm has been elected as the first Estonian to the International Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission during the elections held at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games.
Johanna Talihärm, a biathlete who has competed in her fourth Olympic Games, has made history by being elected as the first Estonian member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes' Commission. This significant election took place during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, where 11 athletes ran for two available spots on the commission. Talihärm secured 973 votes, and she was joined by South Korean bobsledder Yunjong Won, who received 1,176 votes. Overall, 84 percent of eligible athletes participated in the voting process.
The formal appointment for Talihärm will take place during the closing ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on February 22 in Verona. Talihärm expressed her happiness over the trust placed in her by Olympic athletes, stating that she wants to ensure their experiences are valued and respected. She emphasized her readiness to advocate for the athletes, indicating that this marks the beginning of her responsibilities within the commission.
Talihärm's nomination was supported by the Estonian Olympic Committee in collaboration with the EOK Athletes' Commission. In addition to her role within the IOC commission, she leads the Athletes' Commission of the European Olympic Committees, contributing to the IOC’s sustainability initiatives and the representation of athletes on various platforms.
