Egypt: 10 killed in horrific accident on the first day of Ramadan

On the first day of Ramadan, a tragic traffic accident in Port Said, Egypt claimed the lives of ten individuals and left several others injured. The incident occurred when a heavy transport vehicle collided with a pickup truck carrying a group of workers on the June 30 axis south of Port Said. Local media reported that ambulances transported the deceased to healthcare facilities while others were taken to the 30 June Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the collision was caused by excessive speed, with some news outlets indicating that the force of the impact resulted in dismemberment of some victims' bodies. In response to the incident, local authorities and security leaders visited the crash site, and the public prosecutor's office initiated investigations to uncover the details surrounding the accident. The incident comes amid rising concerns over road safety in Egypt, particularly in light of recent statistics indicating a growing number of road traffic injuries and fatalities.

According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, Egypt reported 76,362 road traffic injuries in 2024, up from 71,016 in 2023, an increase of 7.5%. Official data also showed that between 2019 and 2023, over 33,000 fatalities and 315,000 injuries resulted from road accidents. A report from the Prime Minister's office suggested that recent road construction projects have contributed to a decrease in fatalities from road incidents, highlighting the ongoing struggle to enhance road safety in the country.
