LSM will not broadcast events of the Paralympic Games with participation from representatives of aggressor states
LSM has decided not to broadcast Paralympic events featuring athletes from aggressor states, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
LSM, the Latvian public media outlet, has announced its decision to refrain from broadcasting events of the Paralympic Games that include athletes from what it terms 'aggressor states.' This decision is rooted in the organizationβs clear values and sense of responsibility towards its audience, particularly considering the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. LSM's main editor, Anita Brauna, highlighted the unacceptability of normalizing the presence of such athletes in international sporting events during this sensitive time.
In the announcement, LSM emphasized that while it would not broadcast the events featuring these athletes, it would still provide comprehensive coverage of the Paralympic Games that puts a spotlight on Latvian athletes and the most significant happenings within the games. This reflects LSM's commitment to editorial independence and maintaining a clear framework of values while informing the public about international sports organizations' decisions.
This move coincides with the broader context of the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina concluding, as the stage transitions to the Paralympic Games, which will take place in Italy from March 5 to March 16. LSM's stance is a reflection of Latvia's position toward the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the war's implications on cultural and sporting events, showcasing the intersection of sports, politics, and national values.
