LSM will not broadcast Paralympic games involving representatives from aggressor states
LSM has decided against broadcasting the Paralympic events that feature athletes from aggressor states in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
LSM, the public broadcaster in Latvia, has announced its editorial decision not to air any events of the Paralympic Games that involve athletes from aggressor nations, notably during the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia against Ukraine. Anita Brauna, the chief editor of LSM, emphasized the broadcaster's commitment to societal responsibility and a clear stance against normalizing the presence of representatives from aggressor states in international sporting events. This decision aligns with LSM's values and the broader context of the current geopolitical situation, particularly the war in Ukraine.
In addition to not broadcasting these events, LSM will provide comprehensive coverage of the Paralympic Games to its audience, focusing on Latvian athletes and key event highlights while maintaining a professional journalistic approach. Brauna elaborated that LSM would ensure to deliver clear and contextual information about decisions made by international sports organizations, thereby reflecting its editorial independence and value framework. This step is seen as a part of Latviaβs broader efforts to uphold its societal responsibility in light of international conflicts.
As the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina conclude this week, the Paralympic Games are set to take place from March 5 to 16 in Italy. LSM's decision underscores the growing sensitivity surrounding the participation of athletes from countries engaged in aggressive conflicts and highlights the media's role in reflecting and shaping public sentiment towards such issues in these challenging times.
