Incidents outside the Nikaia hospital: "Unprovoked attack with chemicals and batons" on workers, claims OENGE

The OENGE claims that police forces carried out an unprovoked attack on healthcare workers at the Nikaia hospital during a minister's visit.

The Federation of Hospital Doctors of Greece (OENGE) has issued a statement alleging that police forces conducted an unprovoked attack on the workers at Nikaia hospital using chemical agents and batons during the visit of Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis. This incident has raised concerns among healthcare professionals regarding their safety and treatment by governmental authorities. OENGE also condemned the arrest of Dr. Dimitris Ziazias, a hospital physician and member of its General Council, who was allegedly detained in handcuffs in the Emergency Department.

In the statement, the federation criticized the government for deploying security forces against healthcare workers who are, according to them, the ones sustaining the public health system amid dire conditions of severe understaffing and intensive work demands. OENGE reiterated that attempts to intimidate and suppress the voices of healthcare workers will not succeed, emphasizing that their rights and well-being are paramount in light of the current healthcare crisis.

Additionally, the workers' union at the hospital also released a statement condemning the violent actions taken against their members. They reported that police indiscriminately assaulted medical and other staff during the unrest, amplifying the tension surrounding the already critical state of the healthcare sector in Greece. The events around this incident highlight the increasing struggles between healthcare professionals and authorities in efforts to protect and improve public health services.
