The upcoming film 'Mãe Bonifácia,' directed by Salles Fernandes and starring renowned actress Zezé Motta, is set to premiere on March 31, 2026, at Cine Teatro Cuiabá. This historic film focuses on Mãe Bonifácia, a freed black woman who lived in Cuiabá during the late 19th century and played a significant role in the emancipation struggle of enslaved individuals during that period.
Filming took place between April and May 2025, in a rural area of Sorriso, located 420 km from Cuiabá. Salles Fernandes, originally from Paraíba but a resident of Mato Grosso since 1996, has worked in the independent film scene since 2003. This project is notable as it is his first feature film solely directed by him, as he is also one of its screenwriters. The film has received funding from the Paulo Gustavo Cultural Law and is supported by the Sorriso city government through its Municipal Culture Secretariat.
Zezé Motta, with over 50 years in the entertainment industry, is expected to bring her extensive experience to the role, highlighting the historical significance of Mãe Bonifácia's story.
