Former Mayor and Former Secretary Convicted by TCU for Irregularities in Purchasing Covid Tests in AC
Former Mayor of Sena Madureira, Mazinho Serafim, and former Health Secretary, Nildete Lira do Nascimento, have been convicted for irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 tests.
The former mayor of Sena Madureira, Mazinho Serafim (PSDB), and the ex-health secretary, Nildete Lira do Nascimento, have been found guilty by the Tribunal de Contas da UniΓ£o (TCU) for their roles in irregularities linked to the purchase of SARS-CoV-2 rapid tests during the pandemic. The TCU has imposed a fine of R$ 20,000 on each of the convicted for their misconduct. The investigation was triggered by complaints regarding two contracts initiated in 2025 between the municipality and the company B&F Brasil Ltda, which totaled over R$ 2.5 million for the acquisition of rapid tests.
The investigation revealed two main irregularities: firstly, the tests were purchased at inflated prices, which is a significant misuse of public funds, especially during a public health crisis. Secondly, it was determined that the company involved in these transactions did not have the necessary operating authorization, which raises questions about the legitimacy and ethics of the procurement process. The findings underscore the need for transparency and accountability in government spending, particularly in times of emergency.
This conviction highlights ongoing issues related to corruption and mismanagement of public resources in Brazil, as the pandemic has seen various instances of misuse of funds. It serves as a reminder of the responsibility that public officials have in ensuring the proper use of taxpayer money and the consequences they face when they fail to uphold these standards.
