Expert seeks AI integration in teaching, learning of mathematics
An expert in education technology calls for the integration of AI in mathematics education to improve student performance in Nigeria.
During a recent engagement session in Ibadan, Wunmi Tolu-Alalade, an education technology specialist, emphasized the necessity of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into mathematics education to combat persistent issues of poor performance among junior secondary students. She highlighted that this technological adoption is crucial for modernizing educational practices and ensuring that students are equipped with the skills they need to thrive in a digital age.
Tolu-Alalade introduced the Darsel Learning Platform, which features an AI-powered Learn-by-Text Chatbot designed to create an interactive and practice-oriented learning environment. This platform aligns with Nigeria's national mathematics curriculum, catering specifically to learners in Basic 7 to Basic 9, known as JSS1-3. The chatbot offers students the ability to work through mathematics problems using a WhatsApp-based interface, making learning more accessible and engaging.
The expert's call to action is directed at government officials and policymakers, urging them to prioritize technological innovations like AI to enhance educational outcomes. By addressing the critical need for effective learning tools, Tolu-Alalade argues that the integration of AI can significantly improve mathematics education, thereby helping students overcome existing challenges in their academic performance, especially in a subject that has historically been a struggle for many.
