Polish Waters on the Risk of Spring Floods: The Distribution of Snow Cover Matters
Mateusz Balcerowicz, president of Polish Waters, reports that current conditions on major Polish rivers do not indicate a high risk of flooding during the thaw expected next week.
Mateusz Balcerowicz, the president of Polish Waters, stated in an interview that the current state of the largest rivers in Poland does not suggest a significant risk of flooding during the imminent thaw. According to forecasts from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW), the thaw is expected to commence in Poland within a week. In preparation for this, Polish Waters has initiated ice-breaking operations on the Oder and Vistula rivers to prevent water accumulation due to ice blockage.
Balcerowicz explained that the ice-breaking efforts are crucial to ensure that water levels do not rise dangerously due to blockages caused by ice. Although there are some local increases in river levels that have breached warning or alarm thresholds, he reassured that, based on current data, there is no immediate threat of a major flood. This proactive approach is a part of their management strategy to mitigate potential flooding disasters during seasonal changes.
As Poland faces more days of winter weather, with warnings of frost and snow, the situation remains fluid, and authorities are closely monitoring river conditions. The focus remains on ensuring public safety while navigating the complexities of spring thaw, which can pose challenges in water management and flood prevention efforts.
