Rainy season raises alert for dengue, meningitis, and leptospirosis in Belém; see how to prevent

The rainy season in Belém increases the risk of diseases like dengue, meningitis, and leptospirosis, prompting health authorities to reinforce preventive measures.

As the Amazon Winter approaches, bringing heavy rains between December and April, health officials in Belém are on high alert for diseases typically exacerbated by this season, including dengue, meningitis, and leptospirosis. The municipal health department, Secretaria Municipal de Saúde (Sesma), has ramped up its prevention guidelines and is ensuring continuous monitoring of the epidemiological patterns associated with these diseases.

David Rosário, a technician at the Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance (CIEVS), emphasized the year-round vigilance but noted that the rainy season warrants heightened attention. The CIEVS team continually tracks trends in disease patterns, ready to issue alerts and recommendations to ensure the health system can respond effectively to any potential outbreaks. This proactive approach is pivotal in minimizing the impact of seasonal illnesses in the population.

With the rainy season leading to increased transmission risks of these diseases, the Sesma has also informed that health units, specifically the Basic Health Units (UBS), are prepared to offer support and treatment for affected individuals. The emphasis on preventive actions, coupled with accessible healthcare services, underscores the city's commitment to safeguarding public health during the intense rains of the Amazon season.
