Small parcels from Asian platforms: A warning from the ESEE – Fears of a new tsunami of dangerous products until the duty is implemented

The Greek Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship warns of potential dangers from small imports from Asian platforms until a new duty is fully implemented in 2026.

The Greek Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (ESEE) has raised concerns regarding the ongoing importation of small parcels from Asian e-commerce platforms, citing potential risks until a recently approved duty of 3 euros takes effect on July 1, 2026. This situation indicates a temporary victory for local commerce, but ESEE emphasizes that the prolonged wait for this measure to be enforced raises significant concerns about unsafe products flooding the market, exploiting existing loopholes.

The ESEE officially supports the EU's decision clarifying that there will be a fixed customs duty of 3 euros on small parcels valued at less than 150 euros from non-EU countries. This measure is aimed at bolstering the defense of European trade against unfair competition posed by larger Asian e-commerce giants. By aligning this duty with product categories, the new regulations are expected to enhance consumer safety and fair trading practices in Greece and across Europe.

However, the Confederation warns that immediate actions must be taken to mitigate risks in the interim period. ESEE stresses the importance of preparing for upcoming challenges that could arise from the influx of products before the duty becomes enforceable, particularly in terms of consumer protection and market stability. With these regulatory changes on the horizon, ESEE's advocacy for robust measures reflects a growing urgency in addressing the competitive disparity faced by local businesses amidst globalization.
