Cargo theft intensifies in the State of Mexico and Guanajuato: Here is the reason
Cargo theft in the State of Mexico and Guanajuato has surged, accounting for a significant portion of the total incidents in the country.
Overhaul, a global firm specializing in intelligence and active risk management for supply chains, reported that the Central region of Mexico—including the State of Mexico and Puebla—along with Bajío, accounts for 82% of all cargo theft incidents in the country. In 2025, 82% of national cargo thefts were concentrated in just ten states, with the State of Mexico (21%) and Puebla (17%) leading the statistics. This trend highlights the ongoing challenges faced by transport logistics in these areas.
When comparing the data from 2025 to the previous year, increases in cargo theft incidents were noted specifically in Guanajuato and Veracruz, with a rise of 2% for each state. Additionally, San Luis Potosí and Michoacán saw increases of 1%. In contrast, other states showed a decline, with Puebla experiencing the largest decrease at 6%, followed by Jalisco and Hidalgo, each down by 2%, and a minor decrease in the State of Mexico of one percentage point. These alternating trends reflect the dynamic nature of security challenges within Mexico's transport network.
The issue of cargo theft remains one of the most critical challenges for supply chains throughout Mexico, severely impacting logistics and commerce. The concentration of thefts in specific regions necessitates tailored strategies from law enforcement and the private sector to protect goods in transit and ensure safer conditions for logistics operations.
