Fair Trade Commission: It is Difficult to Suspend Coupang's Business as Identity Theft Cannot Be Confirmed

The Fair Trade Commission reported that it cannot impose a business suspension on Coupang due to the lack of confirmed identity theft in a significant personal data leak incident.

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) of Korea has determined that it cannot move towards suspending Coupang's business operations following a large-scale personal data leak, as identity theft has not been confirmed. This statement was made after a briefing to the National Assembly by lawmaker Kim Nam-geun of the Democratic Party. The FTC mentioned that they are at the stage of implementing correction measures, such as imposing fines, but are not considering a business suspension because the law requires confirmed identity theft rather than simply a data leak. This has raised concerns among the public as the scale of the data breach acknowledges 33 million records; however, the American subsidiary of Coupang claims only about 3,300 records were leaked.
