The Saeima Will Consider Revoking Citizenship from Ex-Politician Mamikins Who Fled to Russia
The Latvian opposition party proposes to revoke citizenship from ex-politician Mamikins for promoting violence against Baltic states on Russian television.
The opposition party "Latvia First" (LPV) has submitted a proposal to the Saeima to revoke the citizenship of former politician Andrejs Mamikins, who has fled to Russia. The party pointed out that Mamikins made public calls on the Russian television channel "Rossiya 1" for Russia to bomb the Baltic states and kill their residents, actions which can be construed as incitement to war and serious violations of international law.
Edmunds Jurevics, the leader of the Saeima faction from the "New Unity" party, expressed concerns that the push to revoke Mamikins' citizenship may divert attention from the alleged pro-Russian affiliations of some politicians joining the LPV. However, he emphasized that Mamikins has violated the Criminal Code by calling for the destruction of Latvian citizens and sovereignty, and he believes that Mamikins deserves imprisonment.
Additionally, Harrys Rozenvalds, the leader of the Saeima faction of the Green and Farmers Union (ZZS), supported the proposal but emphasized the importance of adhering to legal processes. This development illustrates the political tensions in Latvia regarding national identity and responses to perceived threats from Russia, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts in Eastern Europe.
