Tourist dies during 'breath-holding' game with family in the interior of SP

A tourist died after drowning during a breath-holding game with family members in Pedro de Toledo, São Paulo.

Augusto Flávio Vargas de Oliveira, a 47-year-old tourist, tragically passed away while participating in a breath-holding competition with family at a pool in Pedro de Toledo, São Paulo. The game involved contestants attempting to remain underwater for as long as possible, but Oliveira drowned in the process. Local law enforcement, the Civil Police, are investigating the case as a suspicious death due to the circumstances surrounding the event.

Known affectionately as Guga, Oliveira was the beloved president of an amateur football team in Praia Grande, located on the São Paulo coast. Community members expressed their sorrow upon hearing of his death, as he was well-regarded in the area. Despite immediate medical assistance being called for, with the Emergency Medical Service (Samu) arriving within about ten minutes, Oliveira could not be revived after being found beside the pool in a state of cardiac arrest attributed to drowning.

The local government of Pedro de Toledo highlighted the challenges faced by emergency services in the area, citing difficult access roads that likely delayed their response. As investigations continue, this incident raises concerns about water safety, especially regarding games that may not take safety precautions into account, bringing attention to the need for awareness in recreational activities in water settings.
