Tourist from Minas Gerais drowns in river during outing in ES
A tourist from Minas Gerais drowned while swimming in a river during a family outing in São Mateus, Espírito Santo, during Carnival.
A tragic incident occurred in São Mateus, Espírito Santo, where a 21-year-old tourist from Mantena, Minas Gerais, drowned while swimming during the Carnival festivities. The victim, identified as Marcos Vinicius Anacleto da Silva, was enjoying time with his family when he fell into a hole in the river and struggled to escape. Eyewitnesses described the moment he began to call for help, which prompted nearby bathers to jump into the river to assist him.
Among those trying to save Marcos was retired lifeguard Joelson Silva Barcelos, who initially believed he was witnessing playful antics rather than a life-threatening situation. It was only when Marcos submerged for what turned out to be 10 to 12 minutes that he realized the severity of the situation. Despite the rescue efforts made by bystanders and the care provided on site, they were unable to revive him after he was pulled from the water.
This unfortunate event highlights the dangers of aquatic activities, particularly during festive seasons when people are more likely to visit bodies of water. It serves as a reminder for tourists and locals alike to remain vigilant in ensuring safety while swimming, especially in areas where there may be hidden hazards in the water.
