I. Ruginienė: discussions regarding the Taiwanese representative office can be expected at the meeting in the Presidential Palace
Lithuanian Prime Minister I. Ruginienė indicated that discussions about the potential renaming of the Taiwanese representative office might take place at an upcoming meeting.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, known by her maiden name Ruginienė, mentioned in an interview that discussions about the potential renaming of the Taiwanese representative office are possible in an upcoming meeting at the Presidential Palace. She reflected on past decisions regarding the establishment of this office, suggesting that a hasty approach may not have been wise, and emphasized the importance of aligning Lithuania's actions with the European Union’s stance.
She pointed out that it is crucial to engage in dialogue with Taiwan as well as to consider the future relations between Lithuania and Taiwan. Ruginienė had previously expressed no objections to changing the representative office's name to Taipei, which signals a shift in Lithuania's diplomatic engagement with Taiwan. This aligns with broader discussions in the EU about relations with Taiwan amidst tensions with China.
President Gitanas Nausėda also weighed in on the matter, stating that discussions regarding a name change are indeed possible but warned that the response may not be positive. Meanwhile, Speaker of the Seimas Juozas Olekas advised proceeding cautiously, suggesting any changes to the representative office's name should be carefully considered due to potential diplomatic repercussions with China.
