After I. Ruginienė's words about the Taiwanese representative office – Presidential comment
Lithuania maintains its international commitments regarding the One China policy and clarifies that the Taiwanese representative office in the country is not a diplomatic mission.
The Lithuanian Presidential Office has issued a statement concerning comments made by Prime Minister I. Ruginienė about the Taiwanese representative office in Lithuania. The office reasserted Lithuania's commitment to the One China policy, clarifying that the Taiwanese office is not recognized as a diplomatic mission, which they believe avoids any violations of this policy. They emphasized that maintaining this stance is important for Lithuania's international standing and commitments.
Further, the statement reflected on the potential benefits of restoring diplomatic relations with China, noting that improved communication would lead to better mutual understanding. The Lithuanian government expresses hope that China, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, will uphold the principles of the UN Charter, particularly in relation to ensuring peace in Ukraine while respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Prime Minister Ruginienė had previously indicated that Lithuania's steps towards strengthening ties with Taiwan could have been premature, describing her approach as having "jumped in front of the train." She mentioned that there are plans for small initial steps towards re-establishing channels with China. The recent remarks have drawn responses from Beijing, which reiterated that communication channels between China and Lithuania remain open, pointing to a possible future for diplomatic dialogue if Lithuania considers its stance on Taiwan and China.
