Expert warns of security risks in medical records system

An expert raises concerns over security risks in Sweden's medical record system, which is managed by a company linked to undemocratic regimes in the Arabian Peninsula.

An expert has issued a warning regarding the security risks posed by Sweden's medical records system, which is managed by Cambio, a company acquired by investment firm Investcorp, known for its links to Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Jรถrgen Holmlund, a security intelligence expert, emphasizes the need to review the terms of the agreement and implement new security guarantees to protect sensitive patient data.

Currently, Cambio's Cosmic medical records system is utilized by nine regions across Sweden. The company's ownership under Investcorp raises concerns about data handling, especially as these connections could pose risks to patient privacy. Monika Wendleby, an expert in data protection, echoes this sentiment, informing that although Cambio is operational in Sweden, its obligations may still align with its parent company.

In response to inquiries from Sveriges Radio, Investcorp directed questions back to Cambio, which asserts that no Swedish patient data is processed outside the EU. Cambios press chief, Jenny Styren, insists that Investcorp does not have access to Cambio's systems, highlighting a division that aims to mitigate potential security breaches, although skepticism remains given the ownership structure.
