Do you know where to shut off the water at your home? Landlords are urged to inform their tenants of the location.
A survey indicates that many renters lack knowledge about the location of water shut-off valves in their homes, emphasizing the importance for landlords to educate their tenants.
A recent survey conducted by the insurance company LähiTapiola has revealed that many renters are unaware of where to find the main shut-off valve for water in their homes. With freezing temperatures causing pipes to freeze and potentially burst, knowing how to quickly shut off the water can prevent significant damage. Alarmingly, nearly 45% of renters surveyed did not know the location of the shut-off valve, indicating a concerning lack of awareness regarding basic home maintenance.
According to Sini Kujala, the compensation manager at OP Pohjola, prolonged leaks in unoccupied homes can lead to extensive and costly damage. She stresses that everyone should be aware of the shut-off valve's location and know how to operate it. This knowledge is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to minimize water-related damage, highlighting the need for better communication between landlords and tenants.
As the survey suggests, this lack of knowledge is particularly prevalent among renters, who may not be as familiar with the technical aspects of their homes. Landlords are encouraged to take proactive steps to inform their tenants about the main shut-off valve and other essential home maintenance knowledge. This measure could significantly reduce the risk of extensive damage during winter months and promote greater tenant awareness of their living spaces.
