Three injured and five sectors affected after the landslide in Alausí: Armed Forces support the emergency
A landslide in Alausí, Ecuador resulted in three injuries and impacted five neighborhoods, prompting a response from emergency services and the Armed Forces.
On February 18, a landslide occurred in the cemetery area of Alausí, located in the Chimborazo province of Ecuador, injuring three individuals. The landslide was attributed to heavy rains that caused a flow of mud and sediment in the region. The local Ministry of Public Health confirmed that medical assistance was being provided to those injured in the event, highlighting the immediate need for community health services in times of such natural disasters.
The landslide has also caused significant damage to housing in several neighborhoods, including La Elegancia, Millinquiz, Chitaquiz, and Pacalud, as well as affecting the Mexico street area. In response, authorities mobilized resources from the National Police, the Alausí Fire Department, and the National Risk Management Secretary (SNGR), who deployed rescue units and heavy machinery to assist in the affected sectors. This shows a coordinated emergency response aimed at minimizing further damage and providing relief to the communities impacted by the disaster.
Additionally, support from the Armed Forces was coordinated through the local ECU911 center in Riobamba to assist in rescue and recovery efforts in the affected area. The situation prompts conversations around disaster preparedness and response strategies in Ecuador, particularly in regions prone to landslides due to extreme weather conditions, as the E35 highway was also reported to be affected, complicating access to aid for the local population.
