C’River communities protest neglected federal road, demand FG’s intervention
Communities in Cross River State, Nigeria, are protesting the neglected state of federal roads, particularly the Ikom-Obudu highway, demanding government action for repairs.
Residents in Cross River State have voiced their frustrations over the dire condition of federal roads, notably the Ikom-Obudu highway, which has remained in disrepair for over 40 years. The protesters, representing five local government areas— Ikom, Etung, Boki, Obanliku, and Obudu—are urging the federal government for urgent intervention to reconstruct the road, which they claim has already caused fatalities and impeded local economic activities.
Dr. Martins Assam Abo, a youth leader, emphasized the road's significance as a vital link between the Obudu Mountain Resort and local trade routes, stating that its deterioration has heavily impacted transportation and commerce in the region. The protesters have threatened to completely block the road if no action is taken by the government within one week, underscoring their determination to ensure adequate infrastructure is provided.
The ongoing neglect of vital roads like the Ikom-Obudu highway highlights a broader issue of infrastructure decay in Nigeria, where poor road conditions are a common grievance among citizens. The situation not only raises concerns about public safety but also poses a significant barrier to local economic recovery, emphasizing the importance of government accountability and responsive action to civic demands.
