Section of the Tietê River turns green again in the interior of SP: 'It becomes that pea soup', says the president of the parliamentary front
A section of the Tietê River in Adolfo, SP, has turned green again, prompting concerns from locals about environmental degradation and fish mortality.
The Tietê River in Adolfo, São Paulo, has once again exhibited an alarming green coloration, a situation reported by local news on Wednesday, the 18th. Residents have noted the water's density and foul odor, leading to the death of numerous fish, a recurrence that fishermen claim has become increasingly common in the area. Antonio Manuel dos Santos, a local retiree, stated that such occurrences began around two to three years ago, marking a significant environmental decline in the river's health and local ecosystem.
In response to the severe environmental concerns surrounding the river, the creation of the Parliamentary Front for the Tietê in 2025 was initiated, comprising 190 councilors from 46 municipalities. This group aims to address the pollution and other issues affecting the Tietê. The president of the front in Adolfo, Rubens Cesar Avelino, indicated that they have sought assistance from the São Paulo State Assembly (Alesp) to tackle the urgent situation, which reflects wider struggles against water pollution in the region.
The persistent green coloration of the Tietê River raises significant concerns about pollution control and environmental preservation in São Paulo. It also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local communities as they witness the deterioration of their natural resources. The situation calls for increased attention from both local authorities and environmental advocates in efforts to restore the river and protect its ecosystem from further damage.
