In 2025, courts in Jigawa State received a total of 30,058 cases, with 22,829 cases successfully disposed of, according to a report from the Jigawa State Judiciary. This disclosure was made during the annual Bar and Bench Meeting in Dutse, where the Chief Judge, Justice Umar M. Sadiq, detailed the performance of various courts in the state. The meeting highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the judiciary, particularly the backlog of cases, which currently stands at 7,070 cases pending.

The report breaks down the case statistics by court type, revealing that State High Courts received 917 cases, of which 685 were disposed of, leaving 233 cases pending. The Magistrates’ Courts had a more significant workload, receiving 5,016 cases but only managing to dispose of 2,014, leaving 3,002 cases unsettled. Furthermore, the Shari’a Court of Appeal recorded 148 total cases, with 86 resolved, and two pending, illustrating the varied caseload among different jurisdictions.

The Chief Judge acknowledged the efforts of judicial officers and stakeholders in managing the caseloads yet underscored the importance of continuous improvements in efficiency to tackle the backlog. These statistics not only reflect the operational capacity of Jigawa State’s judiciary but also highlight pressing judicial reform needs to enhance justice delivery in the region.
