Latvia is struggling with the construction of the Rail Baltic line
Latvia is facing significant challenges in the construction of the Rail Baltic line, with funding only sufficient for 52 kilometers of the railway.
Latvia is grappling with substantial difficulties in the development of the Rail Baltic railway line. The government has determined that the current funding of 603 million euros will only allow for the construction of 52 kilometers of railway embankment. With the next European Union funding period opening in two years, the situation appears dire for the project’s advancement.
During two meetings, the Latvian government discussed the future of Rail Baltic, ultimately arriving at a rather bleak conclusion regarding the rail project. The limited stretch of track that can be constructed will extend from Mis to the Lithuanian border, near Riga, and includes the establishment of an Iecava construction center along with some additional segments of track between Mis and Daugavpils. However, there was no mention of the railway section extending towards Estonia, and it seems that beyond political intent, little progress has been made.
Additionally, recent revelations have clarified the costs associated with constructing the railway. The section between the Latvian-Lithuanian border and Misa is 45 kilometers long, with an anticipated construction cost exceeding 520 million euros. This marks the first opportunity to quantify the expense of building one kilometer of railway, which is estimated to be around 11.572 million euros. These financial constraints could significantly impact the timely completion and effectiveness of the Rail Baltic project, an endeavor critical for enhancing regional connectivity.
