In Latvia, it is currently possible to build a 52.7-kilometer long foundation for the 'Rail Baltica' main route with available funds
Latvia has secured EU funding for the construction of a 52.7-kilometer segment of the 'Rail Baltica' main route as part of the 2021-2027 planning period.
Latvia's Ministry of Transport has announced that with the funding available from the European Union's (EU) 2021-2027 planning period, the construction of a 52.66-kilometer long foundation for the 'Rail Baltica' main route is now feasible. This project is being supported by the European Infrastructure Connecting Instrument (EICI), which has provided several calls for projects and signed contracts to utilize the available funding up to 2025.
In addition, the completion of the 2024 EICI funding agreement, signed in October 2025, will clarify the funds available for the construction of the 'Rail Baltica' foundation until the next planning period begins in 2028. The contracts signed under the EICI scheme indicate that a total of nearly 700 million euros will be accessible for the works related to the 'Rail Baltica' main route projects in Latvia.
This funding is significant as it covers not only direct construction costs but also other related expenses. The 'Rail Baltica' project is crucial for enhancing rail connectivity in the Baltic states, and the financial backing highlights the EU's commitment to improving infrastructure across member states, supporting regional development and facilitating passenger and freight transport in the area.
