Chinese Electric Bus Started Acting Strange in Tampere - The Reason was Revealed

In Tampere, Finland, a Chinese-made electric bus exhibited unusual behavior during a journey, which was attributed to a radio equipment malfunction rather than a security vulnerability.

In Tampere, Finland, a recent incident involving a Chinese electric bus drew attention when it began to behave strangely while in transit. According to reports from Ilta-Sanomat, the bus suddenly played loud music during its route from Hervanta to Keskustori on a Friday afternoon. The incident, which could have caused alarm among passengers, was promptly addressed by local transport officials.

Juha-Pekka Häyrynen, the planning manager of Tampere's public transport company Nyssen, provided an explanation for the unusual occurrence. It was revealed that the cause was a malfunction in the bus's radio equipment, specifically a defective volume control that may have failed due to vibrations during the journey. This technical issue clarified that the loud music was not linked to any cybersecurity vulnerability, which has been a concern associated with the Chinese-manufactured electric buses, notably from the Yutong brand.

Despite the incident, the overall security risk associated with these buses remains low, as assessed by Nyssen. Previous investigations into the security of these electric buses have been conducted in Norway, where it was established that, theoretically, a remote connection could be made to the buses. However, local authorities in Tampere have determined that this connection does not pose a significant risk to passenger safety or privacy, allowing the continued operation of these vehicles within the city's transport system.
