State of Emergency Declared in Slovakia Due to Oil Shortage

Slovakia has declared a state of emergency to utilize oil reserves and ensure supply to the 'Slovnaft' refinery amidst a shortage caused by disrupted oil deliveries from Russia.

Slovakia has announced a state of emergency set to commence from Thursday, allowing the country to use emergency oil reserves. This measure aims to secure supplies for the 'Slovnaft' refinery and prevent disruptions in fuel availability at gas stations throughout the nation. The declaration follows the cessation of oil deliveries via the 'Družba' pipeline, which runs through Ukraine, significantly impacting the country's energy supply chain.

As of the end of January, oil supplies from Russia were halted, spurring immediate concerns regarding fuel accessibility. 'Slovnaft' has been seeking alternatives for necessary crude oil, notably sourcing from Croatia through a pipeline running through Hungary. However, the company has indicated that the full delivery capacity via this route is expected to be restored only after 20 to 30 days, presenting a temporary gap in supply and heightening the urgency of the emergency measures.

Additionally, 'Slovnaft' has announced a suspension of oil deliveries to Ukraine in light of prioritizing fuel supply for its domestic market. This development underscores the broader implications of the situation on regional energy security and highlights the continuing challenges faced by countries reliant on Russian energy imports amid geopolitical tensions.
