Approximately 44% of clients in Riga's social care centers have dementia

Approximately 44% of clients in Riga's social care centers are diagnosed with dementia, according to the Riga Social Administration director.

In a recent meeting of the Social Affairs Committee of the Riga City Council, it was reported that around 44% of clients in the city's social care centers (SAC) have been diagnosed with dementia, highlighting a growing concern in both social and healthcare sectors. Mārtiņš Moors, the director of the Riga Social Administration, emphasized the increasing visibility of this issue, which is also affecting workplaces. The analysis reflects a rising trend in dementia cases among clients, indicating an urgent need for comprehensive care solutions. The statistics revealed that 44% of those currently receiving care in Riga's SAC are dementia patients, with a significant 58% of people on the waiting list also suffering from the condition. Furthermore, 34% of individuals receiving home care are clients with dementia, showcasing the pervasive nature of this health crisis in the region. The committee is evaluating a proposed action plan that includes effective measures to address dementia care within the community and improve overall quality of life for affected individuals and their families. A key strategy discussed was the geographic optimization of care services to ensure equitable accessibility across all Riga neighborhoods. The plan aims to avoid the concentration of multiple care centers in one area by strategically planning new day care facilities. This approach is expected to improve service delivery and accessibility for dementia patients, while also addressing early diagnosis and treatment strategies, which are crucial for effective management of dementia symptoms and improving patient support systems.
