Cold or Heat? A new cold front approaches Mexico while a heatwave continues to affect these states

A new cold front is moving toward Mexico, while a heatwave persists in several states.

On February 18, various weather systems are set to impact Mexico, beginning with cold front number 35, which is spreading over the northern regions of the country but is expected to shift southeast into the United States by Wednesday afternoon, thus no longer affecting Mexico. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) forecasts the arrival of another cold front that will interact with front number 35, a polar trough, and both polar and subtropical jet streams. This interaction is likely to result in strong to very strong winds and a drop in temperatures across the northern part of the country.

Meanwhile, the rest of Mexico will experience warm to hot weather, with low probabilities of rain. The heatwave, which entered the country yesterday, will continue to impact states such as San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Jalisco, and Oaxaca. Temperatures are expected to soar, with maximums reaching 40 to 45 °C in regions like Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, while a range of 35 to 40 °C is forecast for Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas among others.

These simultaneous weather patterns underscore the varied climatic challenges facing different regions in Mexico, with some experiencing extreme heat while others prepare for potentially severe weather changes. The ongoing heatwave particularly raises concerns for public health and energy demand, while the cold front poses risks for infrastructure and travel in the affected northern areas.
