Alternatives to milk: How dangerous almond drinks can be

Many almond drinks contain carcinogenic aflatoxin from mold, posing a particular risk to children.

Almond drinks, often consumed as an alternative to cow's milk, may pose health risks for young children due to contamination with aflatoxin B1, a carcinogenic mold toxin. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Germany conducted laboratory tests on 162 commercial plant-based drinks, including almond, oat, and soy, analyzing the presence of mycotoxins and plant toxins and assessing their health impacts on children aged six months to under six years.

The findings revealed that 31 out of 39 almond drinks tested were contaminated with aflatoxin B1, which can cause cancer through genetic changes. The BfR states that no safe lower threshold can be established due to the nature of the toxin, making the consumption of these almond drinks a notable health risk for young children. The Institute has categorized the likelihood of health impairments from consuming these almond drinks as 'medium,' suggesting a cause for concern among parents and caregivers.

Given the increasing popularity of plant-based milk alternatives, particularly among families with young children, this report raises alarm bells about the safety of such products. As consumers become more health-conscious and seek alternatives to dairy, it is crucial for manufacturers to prioritize safety and transparency in their products. Authorities may need to intensify regulatory scrutiny on these beverages to ensure the protection of children's health.
