Mikkeli plans a new school and swimming hall by Lake Saimaa: "Will revolutionize the harbor area," says city development director
The city of Mikkeli is planning to build a new primary school and daycare center by Lake Saimaa, a project that has gained supportive feedback from local decision-makers.
Mikkeli's city development director, Jouni Riihelä, has been preparing a development plan centered around the Savilahti area since last autumn. The core of the plan includes the construction of a new primary school and daycare center, expected to start in the upcoming years on the site of the current parish building in Lähemäki. Initial visual representations of the plan have been shared with the city council, and feedback from political decision-makers has been positive and encouraging, with strong support to move forward with the project.
Discussions about the need for a new eastern area school have been underway in Mikkeli potentially as late as the end of the 2020s. The Mikkeli Cathedral Parish has expressed its intention to divest of surplus properties, signaling openness to land sales for the school project. Riihelä emphasizes that the school solution should serve the entire Mikkeli community rather than just the school or the city itself, highlighting a vision for broader community integration.
Furthermore, Riihelä notes collaborative opportunities between the proposed school and a nearby youth institute, suggesting that the school could utilize the sports facilities of the institute while the institute might use the school's auditorium. The primary school is planned to operate from eight in the morning to the late afternoon, planning facilities to cater to a young audience effectively, thus reinforcing the integration of educational and recreational spaces in Mikkeli's urban fabric.
