Red alert in Evros – River levels are rising
The Evros Regional Unit in Greece has been placed on 'Red Code' alert due to the high risk of flooding as river levels rise.
The Evros Regional Unit in Greece has been declared under a 'Red Code' alert starting from February 18 to February 23, 2026, due to increasing risks of flooding as the river levels rise and threaten to overflow. This alert was issued by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, which cited the assessment from the Risk Evaluation Committee highlighting the imminent danger to the area. The regional governor has concurred with this assessment, reinforcing the need for urgent action.
In light of this situation, local authorities including the Municipality and the Region have been instructed to convene their Local Operational Coordination Bodies for Civil Protection (T.E.S.O.P.P.) and Regional Operational Coordination Bodies. This step is crucial as it allows for effective and coordinated response efforts to mitigate possible flooding and to protect the residents of the affected area.
As the situation remains critical, authorities are preparing for proactive measures to safeguard the community and infrastructure while monitoring the river's behavior closely. This alert underscores the increasing challenges posed by extreme weather conditions in the region and calls for preparedness among citizens and local governments alike.
