LIVE: Vote of no confidence against Kristina Kallas in the Riigikogu
The Estonian opposition is seeking a vote of no confidence against Education and Research Minister Kristina Kallas during today’s Riigikogu session.
The Estonian opposition parties are initiating a vote of no confidence against Kristina Kallas, the country's Minister of Education and Research, during a session of the Riigikogu. This motion has been signed by 28 members from various factions, including Isamaa, Keskerakonna, and the Conservative People's Party of Estonia, alongside independent MPs. The impetus behind the motion is criticism of Kallas's leadership, characterized as turning the Ministry into a 'laboratory of experiments' that has led to continuous reforms and failures, causing stress among students, educational institutions, and administrators.
Former Education Minister Tõnis Lukas, leading the no-confidence effort, emphasized the detrimental impacts of these reforms, particularly highlighting the problematic implementation of the SAIS3 development project. Due to its issues, primary school graduates and educational establishments face last-minute changes to their plans. Lukas pointed out that school leaders had already raised concerns in the fall about increasing the compulsory schooling age and the need for practical solutions from the ministry, yet critical requirements were disclosed late, only on the second Christmas holiday.
As the session proceeds, debates will ensue wherein parliamentary members will voice their support or opposition to the motion. This situation reflects broader tensions in the Estonian political landscape pertaining to educational reforms and policy direction, influencing the operational stability of the education sector and addressing accountability at governmental levels.
