Live at 14: Riigikogu session, attempt to dismiss the Minister of Education
The Estonian Riigikogu will hold a session addressing an attempt to dismiss Education Minister Kristina Kallas following concerns from opposition politicians.
The Riigikogu in Estonia is set to convene for a session where the opposition will present a motion to dismiss Education and Research Minister Kristina Kallas. This session, scheduled to begin at 14:00, will be broadcast live by ERR. The discussion regarding the no-confidence vote is slated to take place as the final agenda item of the session, which may extend into the evening if necessary.
The motion to dismiss Kallas has been signed by 28 members of the Riigikogu, with support coming from various factions, including Isamaa, the Center Party, and members of the Conservative People's Party. TΓ΅nis Lukas, a member of Isamaa and a key proponent of the motion, has criticized Kallas's management of the Ministry, claiming it has turned into a "testing ground" for continuous reform efforts that disrupt the education system, causing unnecessary stress for students, educational institutions, and school administrators.
Recent criticisms focused on failures in the development of the SAIS3 platform, which has had direct impacts on graduating students this year. The outcomes of the no-confidence vote could significantly affect the political landscape in Estonia, especially regarding how educational reforms are implemented and perceived by the public and stakeholders in the education sector. This situation sheds light on the ongoing tensions between the government and opposition parties as they debate critical issues affecting Estonia's education system.
