Tallinn City Government Decides on the New Tram Route in Pelguranna
The Tallinn City Government approved a new tram route for Pelguranna, which avoids certain areas to provide a more efficient service.
The Tallinn City Government has officially approved changes to the tram network, specifically the new tram route for Pelguranna. This route will not pass through Puhangu Street or disrupt the Stroomi Beach park, instead traveling through Putukaväila to Kolde Avenue. Tallinn's Deputy Mayor for Environment and Municipal Affairs, Kristjan Järvan, has stated that this solution represents the best compromise for the city, enhancing service to local residents and ensuring better access to Pelgulinna state gymnasium.
Järvan emphasized that the newly selected tram route will serve a larger population and allow for quicker and more cost-effective construction compared to earlier proposals. Notably, acquiring private land is not necessary, which will save time for officials and money for taxpayers. The estimated cost for the new route will be six to eight million euros lower, with a shorter construction timeline than previous alternatives.
Moreover, the route change provides additional assurance that the new tram line will be completed before the end of 2029, a critical condition for securing European Union funding. This strategic approach underscores the city's commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure while being financially responsible and environmentally considerate.
