Russian instructors help overhaul Sahel state’s defense – foreign minister

Burkina Faso's foreign minister highlights the crucial role of Russian instructors in transforming the nation's military capabilities to address militant threats.

In an exclusive interview with RT, Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore expressed the significant impact Russian instructors have had on the country's armed forces. He stated that their collaboration is instrumental in enabling Burkina Faso to shift towards offensive operations against militants, contributing to the larger goal of stabilizing the region under the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This partnership has reportedly rejuvenated the defense and security sectors of Sahel nations, helping them reclaim territories previously held by militant groups.

Traore also referenced a year-end report from the defense minister indicating that the cooperation with Russia has allowed Burkina Faso to regain over 74% of its territory that was once under militant control. This development reflects a broader trend in which nations in the Sahel region are increasingly looking towards external partners, such as Russia, for military support, especially in light of ongoing security challenges posed by various extremist groups.

The foreign minister's remarks came after his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, discussing not just military cooperation, but also a range of strategic partnerships. Traore announced the signing of new agreements, establishing a legal framework for bilateral cooperation that could lead to enhanced military training and shared resources. This indicates a strengthening of ties between Burkina Faso and Russia, particularly as Western influence diminishes in the region amidst ongoing conflicts and transitions in governance.
