Japanese Parliament Reappoints Takaiichi as Prime Minister
The Japanese Parliament officially reappointed Sanae Takaiichi as Prime Minister following a historic electoral victory by her party.
On Wednesday, the Japanese House of Representatives officially re-appointed Sanae Takaiichi as Prime Minister, just ten days after her party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), achieved a historic landslide victory in the elections. At 64, Takaiichi is notable for being Japan's first female Prime Minister since her initial appointment in October 2025. In the recent early legislative elections held on February 8, the LDP secured more than two-thirds of the seats in the House of Representatives, winning 315 out of 465, marking the best electoral performance in the party's history.
The electoral results also saw Takaiichi's coalition partner, the Innovation Party of Japan, win 36 seats, contributing to a governing coalition of 351 members in Parliament. Previously, the LDP held 198 seats, while the Innovation Party had 34. This election victory sets a strong mandate for Takaiichi, who has expressed intentions to enhance Japan's military capabilities while potentially exacerbating tensions with China, all amidst ongoing pressure to revive a sluggish economy.
In addition to the successes of the LDP and its allies, the election also saw the rise of the anti-immigration party, Sanseitō, increasing its representation from 2 to 15 seats. This shift illustrates a growing political response to immigration policies within Japan and may influence future legislative agendas as Takaiichi leads her government amid these pressing issues.
