Instead of expensive missiles, a bet on lasers. Ukraine showed a quiet 'killer' of Russian drones

Ukraine is developing a laser weapon system named Sunray to combat Russian suicide drones more efficiently and cost-effectively amid a shortage of air defense missiles.

In response to a critical shortage of air defense missiles, Ukraine is focusing its efforts on the development of a new laser weapon system designed to effectively counter the numerous attacks launched by Russian suicide drones. Known as Sunray, this innovative system employs a concentrated laser beam capable of penetrating the structure of attacking drones and disabling their electronics, offering a quieter and more cost-effective alternative to traditional missile defense systems.

According to reports from The Atlantic, the Sunray prototype presents several advantages over existing Western laser initiatives, such as the Helios system of the U.S. Navy, which has seen significant investment (approximately $150 million). The Sunray system, developed under far more modest conditions, operates silently and does not require physical ammunition; instead, it utilizes energy for its operational needs. Its compact design allows it to be mounted on various light vehicles, including pickups, providing rapid mobility and flexible deployment in the field.

The development of this laser weapon underscores Ukraine's commitment to innovating its military technology in the face of ongoing conflict. As persistent drone attacks continue to threaten Ukrainian infrastructure and security, the introduction of systems like Sunray could play a vital role in shifting the balance of defense strategy and enhancing Ukraine’s capability to protect against aerial threats, potentially influencing the broader dynamics of the conflict with Russia.
