Mineiro family compensated for lost luggage on trip to Disney

A family from São João del Rei, Brazil, was awarded compensation after their luggage went missing during a trip to the United States for a Disney cruise.

A family from São João del Rei, Brazil, will receive compensation after their luggage was lost during their trip to the United States, where they planned to take a Disney cruise. The family, consisting of a couple and their two adult daughters, traveled from Belo Horizonte to Los Angeles. Upon arrival, they discovered that three of their checked bags with Latam had been misplaced, which significantly impacted their vacation as they received the bags only six days later, on the last day of their journey.

The Minas Gerais Court of Justice ruled in favor of the family, ordering Latam to refund them for emergency expenses incurred in the U.S. due to the missing luggage, in addition to paying a total of R$ 12,000 in damages for emotional distress—R$ 3,000 for each family member. This ruling emphasizes the responsibilities of airlines regarding passenger luggage and highlights the potential legal repercussions of service failures in the aviation industry.

Despite the ruling, Latam declined to comment on the case when contacted, which raises questions about how the airline plans to address such incidents in the future. The case underscores the importance of adequate customer service and the need for airlines to handle baggage efficiently, especially during busy travel periods like summer vacations, to avoid similar distress for families traveling abroad.
