Thieves' Loot: More than 97 Thousand Euros and Gold

Three elderly victims in Lithuania reported being scammed out of their money and valuables by individuals posing as police officers and other officials.

In a concerning trend, three elderly individuals in Lithuania have reported being scammed by fraudsters posing as police officers and bank employees. The latest incident involved a 78-year-old man from Vilnius, who lost 15,000 euros to a scammer who called him and falsely identified himself as a police official. The incident highlights the vulnerability of seniors to such fraudulent schemes, particularly when they are conducted in their native language.

Another victim, an 88-year-old woman from the Trakai district, reported a loss of 36,204 euros and gold to scammers who contacted her by phone under the pretense of being from the local power supply company and a bank. This scam took place over several days and involved multiple scammers, underscoring the organized nature of such crimes.

The rise in these types of scams has prompted authorities in Lithuania to urge vigilance among the elderly population, advising them to be wary of unsolicited phone calls and to verify identities before divulging personal information. With over 97,000 euros reported stolen in these incidents alone, it becomes evident that more protective measures need to be put in place to safeguard vulnerable members of society from such deceitful acts.
