'Give it a stronger chlorine treatment': recordings reveal gym owner's instructions to an employee where a teacher died

Audio recordings have emerged revealing a gym owner's instructions to an employee on how to treat a swimming pool where a woman recently died after a swimming class in São Paulo.

In São Paulo's East Zone, a tragic incident occurred in a gym pool, leading to the death of a swimming teacher. Audio messages disclosed in a report by Fantástico show the gym owner, Celso Bertolo, directing a maintenance worker on how to manage the pool's chlorine levels. In one recording, he noted the poor water condition and instructed the worker to test and possibly increase chlorine levels to ensure safety, despite the worker not being professionally qualified for such tasks.

The man responsible for pool maintenance, Severino José da Silva, 43, lacked the necessary expertise to handle pool safety and maintenance effectively. His defense claimed that he routinely took pool measurements and communicated results via messaging app to the gym owner, who determined the appropriate chemicals to apply. This has raised questions about the safety procedures in place at the gym, highlighting the risks posed when unqualified personnel are entrusted with critical responsibilities involving public safety.

This case emphasizes the importance of having trained professionals managing facilities that involve water safety, especially in environments where people are at risk. The community and authorities are facing pressure to investigate further as this incident not only resulted in a tragic loss of life but also sparked broader conversations on public health and safety regulations in recreational facilities.
