NUT sets two-week countdown for Gombe, Yobe on teachers’ wage
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has given a two-week ultimatum to Gombe and Yobe states to implement the new minimum wage for teachers, criticizing the lag in payment compared to other sectors.
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Audu Amba, has announced a two-week ultimatum for local government leaders in Gombe and Yobe states to implement the newly approved minimum wage for primary school teachers. During a press conference after the National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, Amba highlighted that while other sectors have already benefited from the wage increase, local government primary school teachers in these states continue to be underpaid, receiving significantly less than their counterparts in other professions.
Amba stressed that the failure to enact the new wage constitutes an act of injustice and discrimination against teachers, who are expected to foster education yet are undervalued financially. He pointed out the discrepancy, noting that while primary school teachers allegedly continue to earn N30,000, others in different sectors are receiving as much as N70,000, which he termed unacceptable.
This ultimatum not only emphasizes the ongoing struggle for fair wages among educators in Nigeria but also serves as a warning to state governments about the potential repercussions of their inaction. The NUT's stance reflects a growing frustration within the educational sector, raising questions about the prioritization of teacher compensation amidst broader economic challenges faced by the country.
