Nigeria: Workers Give Wike 72 Hours to Release Kuje Council Allocation
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to release the January 2026 salary allocations for the Kuje Area Council, threatening a shutdown if their demands are not met.
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has warned FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to release the salary allocations for the Kuje Area Council within 72 hours, with a threat of a total shutdown of the territory's six area councils if the demands are not met. This situation stems from the FCT Administration's refusal to allocate funds for January 2026 salaries, leaving employees in Kuje without wages, which has raised significant alarm among union members.
During a press conference in Abuja, NULGE President Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Kabi expressed frustration over the administration's inaction, noting that previous communications have gone unacknowledged while employees of other federal agencies, states, and local governments continue to receive their salaries. Kabi stressed that the Kuje Area Councilβs employees have done nothing wrong to warrant being deprived of their legitimate rights and monthly wages, heightening the stakes for the local workforce dependent on these funds.
The ultimatum reflects deeper issues regarding governance and resource allocation within the Federal Capital Territory, with local workers now facing the prospect of financial hardship. The impending strike action could disrupt services in the Kuje Area Council and pose significant challenges to the local governance structure, necessitating prompt action from the authorities to resolve these disputes effectively.
