LG autonomy: Ogun workers set fresh ultimatum

Ogun workers have issued a new ultimatum to the governor, demanding action on local government autonomy and operational conditions of the councils.

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees' Ogun State branch has given Governor Dapo Abiodun a new seven-day ultimatum to respond to their demands for local government autonomy and improvements in the conditions of the 20 local councils. This ultimatum comes after their previous 14-day ultimatum lapsed without any concrete action from the state government. The union's leadership has indicated that failure to address these issues promptly will result in industrial action by the local government employees.

During a briefing at the union's secretariat in Abeokuta, the state NULGE President, Adefesobi Adebayo, emphasized the union's discontent regarding what they perceive as government interference in the operations of local councils. The union has longstanding grievances, including the need for greater independence and support for local governance, which they believe are critical for effective service delivery to the local populace. This situation is further complicated by a previous Supreme Court ruling regarding local government autonomy that remains unimplemented in the state.

The ongoing struggle highlights the broader issues of governance and autonomy at the local government level in Nigeria. The union's ultimatum reflects frustrations not just within Ogun State but potentially across other states as local government employees seek to assert their rights to autonomy and improve working conditions. Should the union proceed with industrial action, it may disrupt services in the state and further strain the relationship between local government officials and the state government, thus impacting governance at the grassroots level.
